The Bijin-ga tradition—an iconic genre in Japanese art history—has long shaped the visual archetype of “feminine beauty” through idealized, static, and often reproducible representations of women. Across the Meiji, Taishō, and Shōwa periods, Bijin-ga gained widespread popularity, gradually solidifying the image of an “ideal woman”—dressed in a kimono, with subdued gaze and a serene posture. Yet, this homogenized idealisation of women also silently erased female individuality, diversity, and the complexity of their lived experiences.
This exhibition takes the kimono—a timeless symbol of Japanese tradition—as a starting point to re-examine the possibilities of Bijin-ga in a modern context. Featuring nine contemporary Japanese artists who were born between the Shōwa and early Heisei eras—Ayana Otake, Chihiro Muramatsu, Rika Oshima, Mitsuko Kuroki, Yu Miyazaki, Terumi Sakane, Yuika Kondo, Ryohei Miwa, and Asuka Irie—their artistic practices reflect the uprising of feminist consciousness, social shifts, and global cultural exchange after the Heisei period.
In this new context, Bijin-ga sheds its role as the ideal beauty or a cultural symbol. It becomes a visual framework through which artists engage with gender, the body, identity, and social structures. From elegant figures in kimonos to girls in casual yukata and everyday wear; from ink-brushed lineworks to mixed-media experiments with copperplate, watercolor, and silk—these works expand on Bijin-ga’s formal elements while posing a radical question: What defines feminine beauty today?
As the exhibition’s title suggests, Bijin-ga is no longer a loud proclamation of aesthetic ideals, but rather a series of quiet whispers—interwoven, resonant affirmations of female existence.
